The 2020 Census counts every person living in the United States – once and in the right place on April 1, 2020. Households will receive an invitation to participate in the Census, then residents can respond online, by phone, or by mail. This is the first-time online responses will be used. If you live in the United States, you are required by law to participate in the official count. The census is mandated by the Constitution and has counted the population every 10 years since 1790.

In previous years, the primary method of responding to the Census was to receive a questionnaire in the mail, complete it and mail it back. For the 2020 Census, the internet is a primary method for households to respond. Mail and phone responses are still accepted.
